Yarrow
Scientific name: Achillea millefolium
Family: Compositae (Asteraceae)
The name Achillea comes from Greek mythology, as yarrow was reportedly the source of the great hero Achilles’ invulnerability. Interestingly, this plant tends to grow on sheep’s grazing grounds, but the animals only seem to eat it when suffering from digestive problems. Yarrow has a long tradition as a medicinal plant: it contains essential oil, alkaloids and tannins that have an antispasmodic, analgesic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Additionally, yarrow leaves and flowers are an excellent spice for cooking.
