Sage
Scientific name: Salvia officinalis
Family: Labiates (Lamiaceae)
Common sage is one of around 900 different species of Salvia, a subshrub native to the Mediterranean region and North Africa. Its name comes from the Latin “salvus”, meaning “healthy”, and refers to sage’s medicinal properties. In fact, common sage is used both as a spice and as a healing plant in traditional medicine. It is rich in essential oils, tannins, bitter substances and flavonoids.
