Lady’s mantle
Scientific name: Alchemilla vulgaris
Family: Rosaceae
Lady’s mantle is a perennial herb with edible leaves and flowers and a pleasant flavour. Its young leaves and flowers are often used to make salads and infusions and to decorate various dishes. It is also used as an ingredient in cosmetics due to the astringent and firming effects of its tannins. The leaves of lady’s mantle filter water through their tissue and exude it back through a process of guttation. This made it popular among the Celtic druids and alchemists of the Middle Ages, who used the guttation drops in its leaves for ritual purifications.
