Cornflower
Scientific name: Centaurea cyanus
Family: Compositae (Asteraceae)
Cornflower is native to the south-eastern Mediterranean region, and was purportedly brought to Central Europe by travellers who carried its seeds. As it used to grow as a weed in cornfields, it earned its name as early as the Middle Ages. Nowadays, however, it has become somewhat rare due to the intensive use of fertilisers and pesticides. This plant’s flowers are edible and used as decoration on various dishes and in salads. Its dried petals are mixed into herbal teas for aesthetic purposes.
